flying penguins!

Bah. Apparently my previous link could only be viewed if you were in the UK. But I won’t be foiled and found the video on YouTube:

You can still see the iPlayer version here, which, of course, is lovely quality. And while you’re at it (and as long as you’re in the UK), check out the Making of video.

tracking santa

NORAD has some clever stuff, I’ll tell you. For 50 years, they’ve been tracking Santa on his journey around the world, using Rudolph’s infrared nose signature.

mind the la-la-language

Old news, I’m sure, but for people who haven’t heard the brilliant London Underground song, here’s the good doctors’ song set to a Flash Video by Tim Ireland at Bloggerheads.

(warning: lots of naughty words)

quest for the rest

Remember Samorost? Lovely thing that was. Here’s another along the same lines.

Very nice. Music’s nice, too.

Girls, games, truths and myths-

A bit of a work in progress, but figure this is as good a place as any to save some thoughts…

Girls don’t like computer games
Myth - mostly. There is an age at which girls are less likely to be “into” games for the most part and this is between 15 and 20 when they are more likely to be concerned with boys, dating and their social circle. That said, a girl who grew up with games is not likely to give it up completely. They’re unlikely to be obsessive about games, however and may prefer games they can dip in and out of or online games that allow them to meet new people.

Girls aren’t competitive
Myth. Girls are just as likely to enjoy a competitive challenge, however, they tend not to take it quite so seriously as boys and generally don’t mind losing as long as losing doesn’t mean that they have to start over.

Girls don’t like challenging games
Myth. Girls do like to think and they like to be challenged. What they don’t like is excessive repetition. They don’t like to continually fail or do the same thing over and over to get it right. Complicated games are good. Excessively difficult games are bad.

Girls don’t like “twitch” games
Myth. Girls are surprisingly good at games that require manual dexterity. They do, however, tend to prefer games with a story or are based in a recognisable worldspace. They want to relate to the games they play and prefer variety in gameplay.

Girls like girly games
Myth - mostly. The younger the girl, the more likely that very pink games (like Barbie or Mary Kate and Ashley) will appeal. Older girls and women, however, don’t like to be patronised and tend to prefer gender-neutral games or games with a choice of male or female lead characters. They dislike games that present women in stereotypical roles or that provide female characters with fewer skills than male characters.

Girls don’t like violent games
Truth - mostly. Girls are still girls, and some stereotypes ring true. Girls are idealists. They are more likely than boys to read fantasy and fairytale type stories. Girls do and have always liked romances and stories that take them to imaginative worlds, though they are less likely to like space-based science fiction. They also like stories and settings that they can relate to. This may seem a contradiction, but what this means is that even fantastical settings need to have a grounding in reality.

Nevertheless, many girls are well up for a good old beat-em-up and enjoy being able to demonstrate that they can hold their own against the boys. However, in general, when they choose combat games, they tend to prefer hand-to-hand combat over gun or combat games and find overt violence, blood and gore “boring” or “disgusting”.

Girls like social games
Truth. Girls are highly social creatures. They like games that they can play with friends, that help them meet new people, that provide opportunities for cooperative play or that allow them to explore relationships (like the Sims).
