whoooo’s watching your energy?
Just bought one of these: http://www.theowl.com/
Very cool. I’ve been walking around the house turning things on and off and seeing how much energy they use. I’ve learned that energy saving light bulbs are well worth the cost - turning one on hardly registers on the meter, while turning on a standard 60W bulb costs about 2p an hour. I appear to have a standard background usage of about 10p and hour, probably for the fridge, boiler and other bits and pieces.
The toaster and coffeemaker are surprisingly expensive (12p+ an hour), the microwave slightly less so (10p) and I’m not at all surprised at how much the tumble dryer uses (30p and hour). TV and computer also use much less than I’d expected.
Of course, it probably would have done just as well to rent or borrow one for a day, but I still think it’s worth the £30 I paid for it (it’s got a temp and humidity meter for a little extra value - apparently my house is very dry).
I’m off to change the rest of the light bulbs over.
